Decades ago (back when i was 11yr old) i have been addicted to this band. Listening from ‘Frogstomp’ to ‘Freak Show’ to ‘Neon Ballroom’, then listen to it all over again and again. I can actually sing along to every single song to their 3 old albums. When their 4th album ‘Diorama’ came out, their sound have changed rapidly quick. I was not use to their new sounds and Daniel Johns song writing have definitely changed too. But Glad the feel of rock is still clinging on. Finally 5th album ‘Young Modern’ came out , their sound and music changed 100%. It does not sound anything like the old Silverchair i use to get addictive to. Even though they changed (obviously the band have all grown up) until this day i will support this band and will always be a huge fan to them no matter what kind of genre they may end up with.
After listening back to the old Silverchair songs and watching Daniel Johns interview. I have found out their song ‘Ana’s song (open fire)’ is about ‘Anorexia’. For decades i thought it was about someone he knew, and now the year 2010 knowing this song was about him and his Anorexia all along. I have read his biography and watched his interview about his personal life. The song ‘Suicidal Dreams’ is my top favorite song from them of all time. Realize it is in fact about Suicidal of a dream he have for years. Other dark lyrical songs ‘Untitled’ , ‘Emotion Sickness’ are too about death, suicidal and anorexia. Their old 3 albums are mostly dark lyrical sounds. But the Rock sound they produced are just Cherry Bomb.
Finding out the real lyrical meaning to Daniel Johns lyrics , just shocked me to my bones. I knew it was Dark but didn’t know it was to the point where Grim rippers are actually waiting. It ain’t sad or depress , it was a walking dead man.
But after years he came out to the light, Daniel Johns have shared his stories to the world. With his braveness and his inspiration to give life a second chance to live. He came cleaned and sober to life. I am sure he have helped others who are going through Anorexia or Suicidal to live life in a Sober positive lifestyles.
